Rachel's Cybercabinet of Natural Curiosities

Starting in 2019, I've been exploring the possibilities with DIY and foraged art materials. I like the creative constraints that occur when I'm limited by space and time: I find what I find when I find and I get the colors the world happens to give me. Since I can't have everything I might want - green, for example, is, and historically was, difficult to come by - making art that says something in a beautiful way feels like solving a multi-dimensional puzzle. I like the challenge and I like that it reminds me of all the makers who came before me who didn't have access to a modern art supply store.

Many of these peices were in my solo show at North Branch Nature Center in summer 2024. Ink made from plant and fungal sources on watercolor paper, various sizes.
